Three people have been arrested following a lengthy investigation by Counties Manukau CIB into the importation and distribution of opium-based products into New Zealand from India.
An investigation was launched after information was received late last year related to the sale and supply of Kamini, which contains the controlled Class B drug opium.
After months of investigations, police this week executed search warrants at six addresses in Papatoetoe and Manukau.
Police seized a significant amount of Kamini and hundreds of thousands of dollars in cash and gold, says Detective Inspector Chris Barry.
“The police also seized more than 400 boxes of allegedly illegally imported cigarettes and are in contact with New Zealand Customs regarding charges under the Customs and Excise Act with an ongoing investigation into their importation.”
A 31-year-old man has been arrested and is due to appear in Manukau District Court on 9/24/2020 on charges related to the sale of opium from controlled class B drugs and possession of opium for supply.
A 58-year-old man will also reappear in Manukau District Court on 9/24/2020 with the same charges, and will also face additional charges related to the importation of opium.
A 27-year-old woman has been arrested for selling opium.
“Since the matter is before the courts, the police are not in a position to comment further.”
