Strong winds that are forecast to hit many parts of the south today are causing major power outages in areas of the Southland.

A Powernet alert warned at 9.53am that there were outages in Dacre and Woodlands, caused by trees on power lines, as well as Okapua Rd, Otama Valley Rd and Otamita Rd.

A new update at 10.44 a.m. said power was cut in areas of East Invercargill, Findlay Rd, Mill Rd North, Mill Rd South, Mross Bush East, Oteramika Rd, Avondale, Dunearn, Heenans Corner, Wakana and Kennington Townships .

The cause of the outages was being investigated, but it was estimated that the power supply would return to work between 12 pm and 1 pm

Meanwhile, MetService warned that gusts from west to southwest could reach 120 km / h at times for Dunedin and could reach 130 km / h on the exposed parts of the Clutha coastline in southern Otago from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

In Fiordland and Southland, including Stewart Island, winds can also approach strong gales sometimes with gusts of 120km / h in exposed locations this morning.

However, there will be a shift to strong southwest winds with gusts of 130km / h around noon today, especially in coastal areas. The warning lasts until 5 in the afternoon.

Road conditions throughout the South can be dangerous, especially for drivers of high-sided vehicles and motorcyclists.

Strong gusts of wind could damage trees and power lines.
