Colbert relayed previously unreleased footage from his trip to New Zealand last year.
Before streaming the clips, he spoke about the freedoms Kiwis enjoy as much of the world continues to suffer under Covid-19 restrictions.
“They have had one of the most successful pandemic responses in the world,” Colbert began.
“With a population of 5 million people, New Zealand has so far only had 25 deaths and approximately 2,000 cases.
“Or as the United States calls it, a Christmas party at the White House,” he joked.
Colbert also praised New Zealanders who listened to expert and government advice to combat the virus.
The TV host said this was due to the strong leadership of Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern.
“I’ve been a longtime fan of Prime Minister Ardern as she personally invited me to visit, picked me up from the airport, drove me around Auckland and then invited me to her home for a barbecue with Lorde.
“My admiration increased a little when I learned that he had handled the pandemic with science and empathy, something that our president believes is a hoax.”
Colbert went on to say that the United States could learn a thing or two from New Zealand and spoke about the “low-key” choices that Kiwis enjoyed.
