Looking towards Lyttelton Harbor from Summit Rd.
A flare was seen during a series of suspicious fires in Ports Hills, police say.
Several fire crews were dispatched to extinguish four “small vegetation fires” scattered across Port Hills between midnight and 1 am Wednesday.
The fires ranged from 40 to 1200 square meters; a rugby field is usually about 8,400 square meters.
A police statement said Thursday that there were reports of a flare being seen. Police are attractive to witnesses.

“Police would like to hear from anyone in the area who saw something suspicious between shortly before midnight and 2 am,” the statement said.
Things It understands that some vehicles were seen in the Summit Rd area around the time the fires broke out.
Lyttleton Fire Chief Mark Buckley previously said that strong winds and warm conditions had initially made it difficult for assisting crews to fight the fires.
“The fires were not significantly large, but they were large enough to cause great concern.
“We were very lucky that the wind dropped. If it was still churning it could have been a lot worse. “
