Southern District Health Board President Dave Cull is retiring for health reasons.
The three-term former mayor of Dunedin issued a statement saying that he had recently been diagnosed with a tumor in his pancreas.
He said he could not commit to his role as president and had submitted his resignation to the board and the Minister of Health.
” I need to undergo more tests to be more clear about the type, treatment, and prognosis.

“However, regardless of what they reveal, it is clear that from now on I will have to devote 100 percent of my energy to meeting this sinister health challenge and supporting my whānau.”
Cull was elected last year to represent DHB’s southern Otago constituency, and in December he was appointed chairman by former Health Minister David Clark.

He thanked the board, management and staff, and wished his successor all the best “as they face the challenges that lie ahead.”
Southern DHB CEO Chris Fleming offered the organization’s “warmest wishes.”
“We wish Dave and his family all the strength for the time to come, and we offer whatever support we can provide.”
The last day of Cull is October 15.
Vice President David Pérez will take over as interim president when Cull resigns.
