Multiple 111 calls were made to Fire and Emergency New Zealand after residents saw flames coming from the roof of an Eltham home around 3 p.m. Sunday.
Several Taranaki crews are working to extinguish a house fire on State Highway 3 in Eltham, following the efforts of neighbors with a garden hose.
New Zealand Fire and Emergency crews headed to High St in the town of South Taranaki around 3pm after multiple 111 calls about fires emanating from the roof of a house.
Eltham Fire Chief Dave Waite said the fire was above one of the rooms and was confined to that room.

But the house was “completely full of smoke”, which is why they asked to return from Kaponga and Stratford.
“The house was about to flash, but the crew managed to shake off the heat and put out the fire,” Waite said.
A neighbor who did not want to be identified said they understood that a mother and daughter lived in the house, but that they were away at the time.
The neighbor said they ran to the house with a garden hose to try to put out the fire, but the brigades arrived shortly after.
