Tottenham shattered Manchester United for a 6-1 win on Sunday, exposing Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s team’s defensive weaknesses by inflicting the team’s heaviest defeat in the Premier League at home.
Only once since 1930 have United conceded six at home, to Manchester City nine years ago. Since 1986, United have not opened the league season with back-to-back losses at home.
This was a crushing defeat for a Tottenham team led by José Mourinho, who was fired by United in 2018 to make way for Solskjær. And against a Tottenham team that has played eight games in 22 days in three competitions and was losing after two minutes at Old Trafford.
But after Bruno Fernandes’ penalty, United’s miserable defense allowed Tanguy Ndombele to level in the fourth minute and Son Heung-Min to score again in the three minutes.
United may be aggrieved that Erik Lamela’s apparent performance led to Anthony Martial being sent off in the 28th minute. But the team was already being managed by Tottenham.
Harry Kane scored his first goal in the half hour, Son scored again at 37, Serge Aurier hit at 51 and Kane finished the win from the penalty spot at 79.
Former Manchester United Patrice Evra criticized the performance at halftime on Sky Sports UK.
“Are you watching this right now? I don’t even want to comment on this game. It’s catastrophic. My advice to Manchester United fans? Buy a PlayStation, buy Sancho and even Messi. No one on this team deserves to play.” said the former French defender.
Eight-time Olympic gold medalist and Manchester United fan Usain Bolt was also unimpressed, saying on Twitter: “I don’t know this feeling. Refuse to accept this feeling or even get used to this feeling.”
