Sir Billy Connolly does not think he has “that long” to live.
The 78-year-old comedian, who will be touring New Zealand next year, was diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in 2013.
He recently admitted that he has been thinking about his mortality since his birthday last month, but the thought of death no longer scares him.
He said: “I think about death a lot now that I’m 78 years old. I don’t think I have that long …
“There is one thing they teach in Buddhism when you see a dead animal in the street: a dove, a bird or a rabbit. You say to yourself: ‘That is the way of life and it will be. . ‘ And it makes you lose the fear of death. “
Billy insisted that he has no time for “nonsense” about reincarnation or the realms of angels.
He added in an interview with The Times newspaper: “I think you go to the same place where you were before you were born. Nowhere.
“You die. It’s over. You should have done it when you were alive. Keep going.”
To try to ease his Parkinson’s symptoms, Billy takes seven different prescription pills and practices meditation every day.
He said, “They keep me steady. It seems like I’m from the medium to soft side. Take a walk on the soft side.”
He has tried alternative therapies, including cannabis, but felt they were not suitable for him.
He said, “They bombard me. And I don’t like it. My daughter bought me CBD cigarettes. It helped a little, but not enough to stand out.”
The Mrs. The Brown actor resigned from stand-up for his health and is “happy” that he made the decision.
He said, “So far I’m not missing anything. I’m glad I made the decision. I don’t want to be on stage showing my symptoms. I can’t.”
“There are guys who are doing very well, there is an American boy who says, ‘Shaking is the new thing.’ He has it on a T-shirt. And bless him, but I don’t want to. I had fun on my last tour talking about Parkinson’s, but that’s enough. I don’t want to be a disabled comedian; I don’t want to be a comedian that I feel sorry for. “
