A fire was brought under control on a ship docked in Napier harbor on Friday morning.

The Kota Bahagia carried general cargo, machinery and components. The crew is back on board after originally being transferred to a separate isolation facility in port.

The fire broke out at 10 a.m., but was under control at 1:30 p.m.

Fire crews were continuing to cool the ship and were working with the ship’s captain and engineer.

People were asked to stay away from the area so that emergency services could continue to function.

A spokesperson for the port said the entire crew of the ship was safe and that it was on its way to its 14-day isolation period. They were transferred to another isolation facility at the port site while the fire was contained.

All operations at the port were halted, but limited bulk cargo operations resumed as of 3 p.m. Friday afternoon.

All container operations, including receiving and delivering containers, were closed for the remainder of the day and would reopen on Saturday morning.

The ship was docked at Pier 4 and the port was under the command of Fire and Emergency New Zealand (FENZ).

A police spokesman said emergency services were notified at 10:45 a.m. and the Breakwater and Battery highways were closed, with people advised to stay away from beaches and other areas around the port.

Health Medical Officer Dr Nick Jones said the Hawke’s Bay District Board of Health’s health protection team worked closely with FENZ, Port of Napier staff and Customs.

Jones said the risk of any crew member getting Covid-19 was low, as the ship had been at sea for 17 days and had come directly from China.
