State highway one south of Whangārei is now open after it was blocked due to a serious accident this morning.

Emergency services have been present in a serious accident on State Highway 1, just south of Brynderwyn and the SH12 intersection, involving a car and a motorcycle.

The accident was reported around 10.15 am

The motorcyclist suffered serious injuries and the Northland rescue helicopter took him to hospital.

Initially one lane was blocked and there were detours, but now all lanes are clear.

The Serious Accident Unit has been notified.

Traffic is bumper to bumper and creeps near the scene of the accident by Pretty Bush Trevor A Cullen Reserve.

A mix of cars and trucks creeps up the south side of Brynderwyns in the direction of Whangārei. But traffic flows freely on the other side.

The rescue helicopter had to land on the Pretty Bush reservation. A farmer continued to move hay bales with his tractor on the same terrain that the helicopter used as a landing space.

The first members of the public on the scene helped divert traffic until emergency services arrived.
