SH1 north of Whangārei reopens after fatal accident

State Highway 1 north of Whangārei has reopened after a serious frontal accident this afternoon in which a child died.

Five others were injured in the accident and one of them fought for his life.

Emergency services were called to State Highway 1 in Hikurangi, between George St and Jordan Valley Rd, around 4:20 p.m. after what was reported was a head-on collision involving two vehicles.

A child is believed to have died in the accident. Police say five other people have been injured, one seriously, two seriously and two moderately.

The road was closed for several hours, but has now reopened.

Diversions have been implemented through Hikurangi Township as emergency services deal with the accident and clear the scene.

The Serious Accident Unit of the Police has been called.
