Severe injuries after car hit a pole in Christchurch

One person was seriously injured and another moderately after a car crashed into a light pole in Christchurch.

Emergency services were called for the accident on Burwood Rd between Cameo Grove and Rothesay Rd in Parklands around 2.30pm on Monday.

A police spokeswoman said a car crashed into a power pole, blocking the road for a time.

Traffic control was implemented, but all personnel had left the scene by 6.30 p.m., he said.

According to data from the New Zealand Transport Agency, some roads surrounding the accident scene were experiencing significant traffic congestion shortly after the accident.

A spokesperson for St John said two people were injured, one seriously and one moderately. They were both taken to Christchurch Hospital.

A New Zealand Fire and Emergency spokesperson said two teams from Redwood and downtown Christchurch were dispatched to the scene and assisted police and St. John.
