Seven people were injured, one seriously, after a head-on collision on a busy Christchurch highway.

Emergency services were called to the corner of Harewood Rd and Harris Cr, in Papanui, at 6.30 pm on Friday after two cars collided.

Kylie van der Bel was having a barbecue with friends three houses from the scene.

“There was an almighty crash, then screams.”

Nearby residents say it was the third accident in six weeks on the busy highway.

St. John’s spokeswoman Siobhan Campbell said seven patients were treated at the scene, one with serious injuries, three with moderate injuries and three with minor injuries.

Five were taken by ambulance to Christchurch Hospital.

Van der Bel said it was the third accident on the same curve in about six weeks.

“[Harewood] It is the main road, people pass by car. I don’t know exactly what happened this time, but speed was definitely a factor. “

The speed limit on Harewood Rd is 50 km / h.
