One person was seriously injured after crashing into a tree in North Canterbury.

Emergency services were called for the accident on Kippenberger Ave in Rangiora at 4.05am Sunday.

New Zealand Fire & Emergency Duty Manager Jonathan Ditmer said two teams from Rangiora were sent into the single-vehicle accident.

No one was caught and the teams assisted police and St John’s teams, he said.

A police spokeswoman said early indications suggested the driver was the only person in the vehicle.

A spokesman for St John said the motorist was seriously injured and taken to Christchurch Hospital.

There have been at least 14 other accidents on Kippenberger Ave since January 2000, according to accident data from the New Zealand Transportation Agency. Of these, one resulted in serious injuries, six were minor, and the rest were non-injuries.

The accident follows two recent fatal accidents in North Canterbury.
