A motorist is seriously injured after a serious accident on the South Highway, forcing the closure of several lanes.
Emergency services were called for the accident in the northbound lane after a single car rolled near Redoubt Rd.
Several northbound lanes were closed after the 3:00 p.m. accident
A spokeswoman for St John said a seriously injured person was taken to Middlemore Hospital.
An ambulance and a manager responded to the accident, he said.
State Highway 1 is closed from the SH20 link (airport link) to the Te Irirangi Drive entrance ramp while the accident is investigated, says Waka Kotahi / NZTA.
The Redoubt Rd on-ramp is also closed, as is the northbound SH20 to SH1 link.
“Please delay your trip or use an alternative route,” he advised motorists.
Traffic increases rapidly in the area as emergency services attend to the accident.
Both northbound lanes were previously blocked alongside the Ti Irirangi Drive on-ramp.
A police spokeswoman said the Serious Accident Unit was at the scene.
“Currently, two lanes of the expressway are blocked and drivers are advised to expect delays and avoid the area if they can,” he said.
Fire and emergency services are on site, a spokesperson confirmed.
