Emergency services rushed to the scene of a serious accident involving a horse-drawn cart on the outskirts of Rangiora in North Canterbury.

Police were alerted to the three-vehicle crash at the intersection of Plaskett and Oxford roads around 3.55pm.

Several St John’s vehicles, firefighters and police have rushed to the scene.

A spokeswoman for St John said two ambulances, a rapid response vehicle and two managers attended after receiving the call at 3.56 p.m.

One person was rushed to Christchurch Hospital with serious injuries, while two others were also hospitalized with moderate injuries.

One of the vehicles was towing a horse float, said a spokesman for Fire and Emergency New Zealand, which dispatched three crews from nearby Rangiora station.

The horse has been eliminated.

Wide cords have been placed around the crash site.

“The road is closed and motorists are being asked to avoid the area and instead travel down Lehmans Rd to Johns Rd and Mount Thomas Rd,” a police statement said.

The 100 km / h stretch of road has suffered several serious accidents in recent years.
