A senior teacher at an Otago school quit his job after allegations of a relationship with a student emerged.
In a statement, the president of the school’s governing board confirmed that a member of the teaching staff had recently left the school.
The school management was working together with the Ministry of Education and the Aotearoa New Zealand Board of Education “to ensure the fulfillment of all our obligations as a school.”
It is understood that the teacher was a senior member of the staff and allegedly had a relationship with a female student. Stuff has chosen not to name the school to protect the identity of the student.

The school declined to comment further and the teacher could not be reached for comment.
The Education Ministry’s Undersecretary for Enabling and Sector Support, Katrina Casey, confirmed that the school had notified the ministry of the alleged relationship.
“The school board is following the correct procedures and we are here to provide support if necessary.”
A school’s board of directors was also required to report to the Teaching Council when an alleged problem arose about a person with a teaching record, he said.
The Teaching Council then had the responsibility to consider whether an investigation of the person’s suitability to maintain their teaching record was warranted, Casey said.
The Teaching Council did not respond to a request for comment.
