Canterbury Police are armed as the investigation into a double shooting in the city of Kaiapoi continues.

A man arrived at Christchurch Hospital in critical condition in the early hours of this morning, with gunshot wounds to his arm and torso.
The other man was shot in the arm and two other people he knew are being detained to assist the police with their investigations.
Neighbors were stunned when armed police stormed Whitefield and Aldersgate streets in the dark.
“I heard a gunshot in the middle of the night and I thought it could have been a firework. Then I heard raised voices and realized that something was happening,” a man told 1 NEWS.
Another neighbor said she woke up at 4:30 am to see flashing lights through the window.
“There were police everywhere, guns. [It was] it’s scary, “he said.
Front-line personnel in the region have been told to carry weapons, as the two men who were shot are believed to have gang connections and there is fear of retaliation.
A neighbor said she had police in her backyard hiding along the fence, camped out.
Police said there is no risk to the community at large.
