Former New Zealand Rugby President Eddie Tonks has passed away at the age of 85.
Tonks served from 1990 to 1995. He was also President of the International Rugby Board, now known as World Rugby.
In 2004 he was appointed a life member of NZ Rugby.
Current NZR president Brent Impey says Tonks’s service to the game was immeasurable.
Eddie started on what was then the NZRFU Council in 1986 and played a key role in organizing the 1987 Rugby World Cup, which was of course a great success. Almost a decade later, he helped lay the groundwork. for the game to continue professional in 1996.
“He was highly respected in both business and rugby and we will miss him. Our thoughts are with his wife Claire and her family.”
NZR CEO Mark Robinson says Tonks’ was immense at her job.
“He served as Vice President of the Wellington Rugby Football Union Board for over a decade, held various positions with New Zealand Rugby during a similar period and was President of the International Rugby Board. His record speaks for itself and he left the game in a better place than you found it. “
Tonks took command of NZR as the game turned pro. He made the questionable decision to appoint Sir John Hart as co-coach ahead of the 1991 Rugby World Cup.
He also served as Vice President of Wellington RFU from 1977 to 1989.
Tonks is survived by his wife Claire, children Murray and Carolyn, three grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
