Rotorua and Napier top the list of crime centers: Selwyn and Central Otago are the safest

Rotorua and Napier are the most crime-ridden parts of the nation, according to statistics analyzed by a Wellington-based data company.

Dot Loves Data analyzed crime statistics for towns and cities over the past five years and found that people living in North Island communities experiencing financial hardship or living in more deprived areas were up to five times more likely to be victims of crimes than the national average.

In Rotorua, 61.21 crimes were allowed for every 10,000 people per month. In Napier the figure was 59.68 crimes.

They were followed by Palmerston North (54.44), Hamilton (53.54), Taupō (50.36), Hastings (49.35), Gisborne (46.61) and the Far North (46.31).

All these centers are among the most disadvantaged areas of the country. Palmerston North was the least disadvantaged, ranked 36th out of the 67 most disadvantaged centers in the country.

In contrast, areas with the least crime are the most prosperous.

Selwyn came in as the center least affected by crime, where only 12.68 crimes were allowed for every 10,000 people per month.

They were followed by Central Otago (13.01), Southland (15.08), Mackenzie District (15.81), Waimate (17.3), Carterton (18.76), Queenstown (19.83) and Tasman (19.92).

Selwyn is the most prosperous center in the country. The rest are in the top 15, except for Waimate, which is ranked 31st.
