A stone thrown by a teenager crashed into the windshield of a car carrying a couple and their young child in West Auckland this afternoon, the Herald was told.

The incident occurred in Royal Heights on Northwestern Motorway, said a man who contacted the Herald.

He did not see the impact, but he heard police speaking to a man who he believed was the boy’s father.

“He was absolutely furious. As far as he was concerned, they had tried to kill his little … the woman [with him] I was crying but the baby was fine. “

At around 4 p.m., police were informed that a group of youths were throwing objects at vehicles passing by on the Northwest Highway, a police spokeswoman said.

“One of the objects allegedly went through the windshield of a vehicle. There were no reports of injuries.”

Police spoke to the youth and one person was detained, he said.

“The person has been referred to youth aid and investigations are ongoing.”

The man who contacted the Herald estimated the boy to be about 2 years old.

The windshield of the family’s car, a white van traveling westward, slammed into the passenger side.

Four teenagers were at the scene and six police cars arrived after emergency services were alerted, the man said.

The incident was “bloody horrific” and I kept thinking about the death of a murdered man when an 8 kg concrete block was deliberately thrown from Princes St Bridge on Auckland’s South Highway.

Taupō Christopher Currie, 20, a fixture for the King Country U-20 rugby team traveling to a game, was killed instantly when the block smashed through his car’s windshield in 2005.

Three passengers were injured when the car subsequently crashed and a 14-year-old boy, Ngatai Rewiti, was found guilty of involuntary manslaughter for Currie’s death and sentenced to four years in jail.

He hoped the person responsible for today’s incident would face appropriate consequences, said the man who contacted the Herald.

“We’re lucky they didn’t kill a girl on the highway tonight.”
