A year of planning and positioning comes to a dramatic end when the Melbourne Cup barrier draw is completed with the horses locked up.

Every year the announcement of the Melbourne Cup field is one of the most anticipated moments in racing.

The 2020 Melbourne Cup draw, riders and barrier draw were held for the Melbourne Cup on Tuesday, November 3.

German assailant Ashrun sealed last place in this year’s Melbourne Cup after a penultimate to first win at the Hotham Stakes.

“Great performance from Ashrun at 61kg. Now in the Melbourne Cup at 53kg. Good to see Geelong Cup form hold up in that race,” wrote Glenn McFarlane of the Herald Sun.

“OMG it was a tough win for Ashrun! Head Bob decides a spot at the #MelbourneCup,” wrote Tim Michell of the Herald Sun.

“Super effort from the winner. He got my attention earlier at Geelong, and coach Andreas Woehler is a top-notch operator. He should go well Tuesday if he stops well,” wrote ESPN’s Andy Withers.

But the horse has overcome a difficult barrier with the number 24.
