A new suburb record has been set for a luxury property in Queenstown Hill, say agents who just sold Cascata “without being seen.”
While they cannot disclose the sale price, Hadley van Schaik and Gerard Bligh of NZ Sotheby’s International Realty marketed the house for more than $ 8 million and say the price surpasses the record of $ 6.4 million for a house at the top.
“The house was bought by an Australian to use as a vacation home,” says van Schaik. “He had an agent here, Mark Harris, working on his behalf, and a friend flew in from Auckland to take a look.
“It’s amazing, but selling a house without being seen is almost the norm for us now. Every day we receive new inquiries. There are many demanding buyers abroad who contact us to buy vacation homes or to buy a house because they are moving to New Zealand and want to buy before they move. “

Van Schaik says the investigations are “definitely related” to New Zealand’s reputation as a safe haven.
Cascata, designed by architect Gary Todd, has commanded a luxury vacation rental of up to $ 11,000 per night.
When the property went up for sale in October, van Schaik said the company had instant inquiries and that the $ 8 million price tag did not put anyone off. I did not expect it to be on the market long, due to the shortage of mid and high end properties on the market.
The house won the TIDA New Zealand Architect New Home of the Year award in 2018 and the Window and Glass Association of NZ award in the same year.
Todd said the house references legendary architect Frank Lloyd Wright’s masterpiece Fallingwater, meaning it was based on biophilic architecture, so it has an especially close connection to nature, both indoors and outdoors.
All four levels of the house have terraces, so the building appears to emerge from the rocky strata. The effect is enhanced by the clear glass walls at the front and rear: 65 percent of the house is glass, which is triple-glazed.
The architect also said that one of the key challenges was the restricted sunlight at the south-facing site. Therefore, space planning maximizes lake and mountain views while attracting sunlight from the rear.
Special features include a waterfall and pond in a rock garden, with the water running inland where there are entry ponds and a second waterfall.
There are four bedrooms, three bathrooms, media room, office, gym, spa-pool, sauna and double garage.
