Q’town drug bust: 6 arrested, $ 125k MDMA seized

Six people have been arrested after police executed multiple search warrants during a drug bust in the Queenstown-Lakes area today.

The acting commander of the Otago Lakes Central area, Sergeant Major Paula Enoka, said that around 30 staff members were involved in the operation that was aimed at supplying MDMA in the region.

“High levels of MDMA have been detected in Queenstown’s water supply, and local bar owners have noticed the effect that drug use was having on their establishments and were concerned for the safety of their customers.”

Police arrested six people this morning after conducting searches in connection with the supply of class A, B and C drugs, Sgt Enoka said.

Today’s arrests included:

• A 24-year-old woman faces two counts of supplying class B drugs, as well as supplying cannabis and possessing cannabis for supply.
• A 26-year-old man charged with supplying class A cocaine, supplying class B MDMA, and possession for the supply of cannabis.
• A 25-year-old woman accused of supplying Class A cocaine.
• A 28-year-old man charged with supplying Class A cocaine.
• A 21-year-old man charged with supplying class B MDMA.
• A 32-year-old man charged with supplying class A cocaine and offering to supply class A.

Police seized more than 2,400 MDMA pills with a street value of about $ 125,000, as well as LSD pills, cannabis and more than $ 5,000 in cash, he said.

“Another cause for concern is that several of the drugs seized and analyzed by the police have once again been made up of substances other than those being sold, putting those who choose to use them at additional risk.

“It is important to remember that illicit drugs are generally manufactured and / or imported by people who put profit first and do not consider the health and well-being of consumers.

“We are aware that we are entering the summer season and there will be others who think that they can carry out these illicit activities here, but they must be aware that they will be targeted by the police.”
