Christmas came early for little Archie Mountbatten-Windsor, ninth in line to the British throne.
On the property ladder at just 18 months old, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex bought him a bespoke playhouse, one that could have cost as much as $ 7,000 (NZ $ 10,000).
A digital painting of the family, including their dogs Guy and Palu, in the Sussexes 2020 Christmas Card features the playhouse as a backdrop. It shows a small thatched roof and a split-barn-door bungalow, big enough for Prince Harry to sit inside, with his own Christmas tree.
The card was sent to the various charities that the Sussexes sponsor and support, including the London-based pet rescue and welfare center The Mayhew, of which the Duchess of Sussex has been a patron since 2018.

The image caused a furor when The Mayhew shared a photo of her earlier in the week on Twitter as it seemed to show that Archie, born in May 2019, has red hair like his father.
“We are delighted to receive wonderful Christmas wishes from our sponsor, the Duchess of Sussex, who also made a personal donation, helping dogs, cats and our community,” read the caption for an image posted on Twitter by The Mayhew.
British tabloid The Daily Mail “Toy experts” analyzed the image, who said they thought the playhouse was “custom made” that would likely cost between $ 4,000 and $ 7,000.
While it’s outrageous for a house no one could live in, it’s not the most some people will pay for a playhouse. A Canadian company makes fantasy playhouses that can cost up to NZ $ 450,000.
The Daily Mail notes that the Sussex playhouse is similar in design, if not scale, to the playhouse gifted to then-Princess Elizabeth in the early 1930s.
According to Architectural overview, “La casita” was a favorite of Isabel and later of the royal grandchildren, especially Princess Beatriz, who renovated the small thatched-roof hut in 2012.
A gift from the Welsh people to Elizabeth on her sixth birthday, it is two fifths the size of a normal house and before Beatrice’s remodel, a kind of 30s time capsule.
“Its décor, which leans heavily towards blue and white and includes checkered and floral prints, a draped bed, a white mantel and a miniature ship”, AD piece says.
The cabin also included scaled-down models of 1932 modern conveniences: a laundry drainer, a gas refrigerator and stove, electric lights and fire, and a cordless, for listening to the King’s speech, no doubt.
“The bathroom has a marble sink, hot and cold running water, even a heated towel rail.”
Although we haven’t taken a look inside, Archie’s playhouse looks a bit less detailed than that, with only one floor.
Vanity fair They set up the Sussexes’ playhouse somewhere in the expansive gardens of their new home in Montecito, California, which they moved into earlier this year.
Before that, the couple had been living in various rentals and a house in Canada, but decided to put down roots in California, where Markle is from, earlier than planned due to the pandemic.
With nine bedrooms, 16 bathrooms and Oprah Winfrey as a neighbor, the $ 10 million (NZ $ 15 million) house is the Sussexes’ first property.
It is estimated that the operation of the sprawling property, which includes a large playground, will cost the couple more than $ 4.8 million a year, not including security personnel provided by Crown.
The family will spend Christmas at the estate, the first in their own home away from the other royals, after having spent an important vacation there.
Markle’s holiday nous has already set a positive tone this Christmas, with her neighbor Oprah Winfrey saying that Markle’s Christmas present, Clevr’s SuperLatte Blend, is now her favorite morning and evening drink.
