Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern revealed that she received a call from the Queen.

His Majesty checked in to see how New Zealand was doing and wished everyone a “wonderful break,” Ardern said in a post on Instagram.

The post was accompanied by a photo of Ardern in his Beehive office on the phone.

Arden said the Queen shared memories of her time when she visited New Zealand during the Christmas season.

Many of Ardern’s social media followers praised the two women for their leadership and took the time to wish the couple a Merry Christmas.

“I have to love such a compassionate female leader. She is always a true inspiration,” wrote one Facebook user.

“Merry Christmas Prime Minister. Thank you for your fantastic leadership throughout all of this. The Queen is great, still going strong at 95! Merry Christmas to you both,” wrote another.

For the first time in decades, the Queen and Prince Philip changed their Christmas plans and will spend the Christmas season at Windsor Castle, said a statement from Buckingham Palace.

The royal family traditionally celebrate Christmas at Queen’s Sandringham estate in Norfolk, but the pandemic has forced them to make big changes.

The 94-year-old Queen and 99-year-old Duke of Edinburgh may be able to see some family members briefly, but they will likely spend most of the holiday celebrations alone.

Ardern told Chris Lynch of Newstalk ZB this morning that he thinks “everyone is ready for a break” this year after Covid-19.

In April this year, Ardern spoke to the Queen the day after the coronavirus lockdown was lifted.

“A few days ago we received a small note to say that the Queen wanted to catch up and see how everyone in New Zealand was doing in the middle of Covid-19,” Ardern posted on Instagram.

Ardern said the call was a pleasure.

“His affection for New Zealand, his interest in what happens here and his memory of places and events that are special to us never ceases to amaze me.”
