Cafes up and down Cuba Street in downtown Wellington have been forced to close thanks to 24-hour power outages.

Espressoholic owner Bhupinder Singh said he had lost as much as $ 6,000 in stock due to the outages, which affected the coolers. Whole cakes had to be thrown away.

Wellington Electricity confirmed that the first of the outages was Sunday afternoon and 407 customers were affected. Sections of Cuba, Vivian, Ghuznee and Marion streets were attacked.

The number of outages was reduced to 15 on Sunday night, but nothing more could be done as electrical workers were unable to enter the buildings.

On Monday, 407 properties were closed again but, again, this was reduced to 15. Workers expected to have the problem resolved by 4 pm.

At Scopa on Cuba Street, workers said electricity was cut around 2:45 pm Sunday and remained off for about six hours. It was up and running on Monday.

But nearby, Espressoholic, Best Ugly Bagels, Slow Boat Records, and several other businesses had given up and closed Monday afternoon.

Wellington Electricity said the problem was due to a cable fault.
