Firefighters attended a call to dry stores in Port Taranaki, New Plymouth, on Saturday morning.

Operations at Port Taranaki were suspended Saturday morning after firefighters were alerted to a fire in a storage building.

The New Plymouth brigade received the call around 7.25 a.m. and three engines from the station attended the scene, Central Region Fire Communications Manager on Duty Mike Wanoa said.

Wanoa said multiple calls were received about the fire at the Craig Norgate store, where animal feeding is taking place.

“The first situation report at 7.42am said it was a very involved fire inside a building.”

He said firefighters carried out an internal attack with three teams as they entered the burning building in breathing apparatus.

Firefighters had extinguished the flames at 8.12 a.m., but were still in place at 8.35 a.m. ventilating the building and dampening hot spots, Wanoa said.

Port executive director Guy Roper said there were no people in the building at the time of the fire, which has caused minimal damage to the structure.

Operations at the port resumed around 9 a.m., he said.

“While investigations have yet to be conducted, initial indications are that a transporter is the likely source of the fire,” Roper said.

“We are grateful for the swift actions of Port Taranaki and Fire and Emergency New Zealand staff to contain and extinguish the fire quickly.”

Roper said the port would work with FENZ and the customer to investigate the incident. “
