Poor ventilation in the corridors and the fishermen’s “double bunk” in the rooms of an isolation and quarantine facility run in Christchurch were some of the key factors that led to two healthcare workers contracting Covid-19.

A newly released report, written by doctors from the Canterbury District Health Board working at MIQ, details their observations as 235 Russian and Ukrainian sailors completed their 14-day isolation period at the Sudima Hotel in Christchurch during October and November. last year.

The report, written for the Health Ministry, has sparked changes in the way large groups are managed at MIQ, and had a positive impact on the second group of Russian and Ukrainian sailors who arrived in January this year.

The report identified the most significant risk factor in the first group of sailors as their double bunk, where two people shared a single room.
