Police are urging motorists to delay travel if possible in the middle of a traffic jam on State Highway 1 as a result of an accident and holiday traffic.

An accident south of Ōtaki on SH1 is causing significant delays both northbound and southbound.

A police traffic alert warned motorists to delay their trip if they don’t need to get in and out of the area urgently.

There were already significant delays on the freeway as a result of holiday traffic leaving Wellington.
