Police investigating two firearm incidents on a West Auckland street now treat them as linked.

However, it was not thought to be related to another incident in a nearby suburb that was initially believed to involve a weapon.

Two people were arrested after the first incident on Keegan Drive, Massey, around noon Monday. The incident forced an elementary school to close.

Both people were spoken to and one was arrested on an unrelated matter, police said.

On Tuesday, around 2 am, another eight shots were fired at vehicles outside the address.

The armed police again arrived at the address and searched it, but no one was found.

Detective Sergeant Major Megan Goldie, Waitematā Criminal Investigation Branch, said Wednesday afternoon that they believed the incidents were related.

Although police continued to investigate all parties involved, no charges have yet been brought, he said.

An examination of the scene on the property had been completed.

“Police have increased their presence throughout the Massey area since this week with additional patrols.”

Leisha Byrnes, principal of Lincoln Heights School, said Monday that police advised the school to close around noon on Monday.

It was the second time this year the school had been closed after it was closed in July following the shooting of Officer Matthew Hunt, which occurred just a few hundred meters away.

A police cordon was lifted shortly before 2.30 pm and parents were allowed to pick up their children from school.

On Tuesday, armed police were called about a possible firearms incident on nearby Archibald Rd in Kelston.

That incident also led to the closure of several nearby schools.

A police spokesman said a report of concern for the welfare of a person had been made after 2 p.m. Tuesday in the area and that a firearm could have been involved.
