Police raise the death toll from Whakaari eruption to 22 after death abroad in July

Police have confirmed that Horst Westenfelder, 64, died abroad in July, bringing to 22 the number of people who died as a result of the eruption in December last year.

Whakaari / White Island erupted on December 9, 2019 while tour groups were still on the volcanic island of Bay of Plenty.

Westenfelder died of medical complications while receiving treatment for his injuries at an overseas hospital on July 2.

Police released a statement from his wife Angelika Westenfelder and her family saying it was an irreplaceable loss.

“Our lives have changed! It is amazing how many months my cheerful, sensible and strong husband” Horsti “has been fighting for his life and I am grateful to all who were thinking of us and helping us during this difficult time.

“He lost this battle and began his last journey in July. It is an irreplaceable loss for our family, his friends and, of course, for me.

“In loving memory of a full and exciting life. I will always miss you.”

A public remembrance event that marks one year since the eruption will take place in the Mataatua Reserve starting at 11:30 am on December 9.

Ngāti Awa will organize a small-scale commemorative event for families hardest hit by the tragedy, invited representatives of emergency response groups and envoys from families abroad who are unable to travel.
