A police officer was stabbed in the arm while attending a family injury incident in North Canterbury.

It is understood that a teenager is now in custody.

Police were initially called to Harewood Rd in Oxford, a 40-minute drive from Christchurch, shortly after 4:30 pm, to receive reports of a man damaging the property.

Canterbury District Commander Superintendent John Price said police tried to talk to the man to de-escalate the situation.

“The man then brandished a knife at the officer,” Price said.

The officer then withdrew and waited for reinforcements.

“When reinforcements arrived, the alleged offender approached the officers while they were still in the vehicle and an officer was attacked through an open window,” Price said.

“The officer has raised his arm to protect himself and has received lacerations on his arm.”

Price said staff provided immediate first aid and the officer was taken to the hospital in a stable condition with moderate injuries.

The alleged criminal was arrested at the scene.

Police were not looking for anyone else in connection with the stabbing.

Neighbors said Things a family lived at the address with their teenage son.

A woman who lived nearby said the first thing she knew of the incident was shortly before 6 p.m. when she saw flashing lights through the windows.

“I thought it was weird, so I went out and took a look.”

He saw several police cars with a man lying on the ground for “quite a long time.”

“They finally picked him up, handcuffed him and took him away.”

The whole incident was “very unusual,” he said.

The woman did not want to be named.

Price said police took the incident very seriously.

“The safety of personnel is our priority, there is always a risk in surveillance, but an assault on an officer who protects his community is an assault on the fabric of our community,” he said.

“Senior police and their colleagues will support the injured officer and his family.”
