A police officer was cut in the arm while responding to a domestic incident in Canterbury.
Canterbury Police Commander Superintendent John Price said the officer received moderate injuries while responding to a family injury incident in rural Oxford shortly after 4.30pm.
“Upon reaching the address, the police have tried to talk to the man and alleviate the situation,” he said.
“The man has then brandished a knife at the officer.
“The officer withdrew and waited for reinforcements.
“When reinforcements arrived, the alleged criminal approached the officers while they were still in the vehicle and one officer was attacked through an open window.
“The officer has raised his arm to protect himself and has received lacerations on his arm.
“The staff provided immediate first aid to their injured colleague.
Later, the officer was transferred to the hospital and is stable.
“No one else was hurt in the accident.”
The alleged criminal was arrested at the scene.
“Personnel safety is our priority, there is always a risk in surveillance, but an assault on an officer who protects his community is an assault on the fabric of our community,” Price said.
“Senior police and their colleagues will support the injured officer and his family.
“Examination of the scene continues at the address and police investigations into the circumstances of the incident continue.”
