The police officer had tried to stop a car on Ormiston Rd in Flat Bush when he was attacked, police said.

An Auckland police officer was bruised and with a broken finger after being assaulted by a man in Flat Bush, police said.

Around noon Tuesday, the officer attempted to stop a car on Ormiston Rd as it took off, said Inspector Wendy Spiller, the Manukau East Counties area commander.

“The car was then stopped by traffic and [the driver] he decided to back up the police car, ”Spiller said.

Both the car driver and the officer got out of their vehicles, and the alleged offender immediately began hitting the officer on the head multiple times, he said.

Members of the public stepped in and called 111, Spiller said, and some were able to detain the alleged offender until more police units arrived.

The officer involved

“He had several bruises and a broken finger; Fortunately, he did not suffer any serious head injuries, and his colleagues and the organization in general are very supportive. “

A 25-year-old man has been charged with assault with intent to injure, recklessly operating a motor vehicle, and failing to stop when necessary.

He is due to appear in Manukau District Court on Wednesday.

“Since this matter is before the courts, the police are limited in what we can say, but we would like to thank the members of our community who were involved in this incident,” said Spiller.

“We would never expect them to put themselves in danger, but we acknowledge their actions. We would also like to say that it is completely unacceptable for anyone to assault a police officer, without being provoked, when they are simply doing their job.

“They leave their families every day to serve our communities and they deserve to return home safely.”
