A man has been arrested and is due to appear in court on Monday after an assault at the Mates bar in Kumeu that left another man seriously injured.

A man is in the hospital in critical condition after an assault in a western Auckland bar on Friday night.

Detective Sergeant Major Kim Libby said the incident occurred at Mates Bar on Shamrock Drive in Kumeu around 6.30 p.m. Friday.

Police arrested a 38-year-old man due to appear in Waitākere District Court on Monday, charged with wounding with intent to cause serious bodily harm.

A second man involved in the incident received moderate injuries.

More charges and arrests are likely, Libby said.

An examination of the scene was completed and investigations are ongoing.

Mates Bar declined to comment on the assault when approached Things.

The police were asking everyone who witnessed the incident to come forward and speak with them.
