Police launched a homicide investigation after the family found a man dead in a Wellington home.

Police were called to the property on Percy Dyett Dr, Karori, today at 8:30 am.

The property has been cordoned off while police conduct investigations and a forensic examination of the site.

Residents the Herald spoke to today say they are shocked to hear that someone had died on their street, which is full of families and is relatively quiet.

“I would not have expected that on my street, in fact I am quite surprised,” said a neighbor. “There are older people and young families living on the streets.”

However, in recent months it was not uncommon for emergency services to be called to the house where the incident occurred.

The resident said a woman, “who appeared badly beaten,” and a small child was seen being taken from the home by police at the time police were called this morning.

While the resident had not heard of a party in the area last night, she said she was saddened to learn of the man’s death, especially just before Christmas.

“It is a very beautiful street, it is full of families, it is near the park, it is close to the schools. I think there are children who live in that area, in that house, so it will be very sad if that is the case.

“It’s pretty scary though, my son walks by every day, so that’s a bit worrisome.”

Detective Inspector Darrin Thomson said police would remain on the property for the next several days, along with ESR, to conduct an examination of the scene.

“The community can also expect a significant police presence in the area over the next few days as we seek to provide reassurance for local residents and speak with potential witnesses.

“If you heard or saw anything in the Percy Dyett Avenue area last night that may help us in our inquiries, please contact the Wellington Police on 105, quoting work number P044839711.”
