Police are investigating the death of a woman at her home in Invercargill.

A block of flats in the suburb of Appleby has been under police surveillance since Thursday afternoon.

A neighbor said police told him that a woman had died suddenly.

Acting Detective Sergeant Major Greg Baird confirmed that police were investigating the death of a woman.

Police were called to the home where the woman’s body was discovered around 4.15pm on Thursday.

“The police are currently treating his death as inexplicable while the circumstances are investigated,” Baird said.

Police said the woman's death was unexplained.

Daniel Hartigan, who lives across the street from the apartments, said he did not know what had happened.

The apartment block was normally very quiet and he was surprised to see the police there on Thursday afternoon.

The boiler suit investigators turned their attention to the rear floor, he said.

The apartment block’s residents include an elderly woman and another in their 50s and 60s.

Hartigan was working outside his home for most of Thursday and did not hear or see anything suspicious, he said.

“There has definitely been no domestic noise or arguing. I would have listened, ”he said.
