Police at the scene of a possible infant homicide on William Ave in Manurewa on September 6.

Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the death of a baby in south Auckland.

Detective Sergeant Major Kevin Tiernan said Stuff The police have launched a homicide investigation into the death of a 10-month-old Manurewa baby.

“The baby was transported to Starship Hospital last night and sadly died this morning,” Tiernan said.

Police are talking to several people in connection with the death.

An examination of the scene is underway and a post-mortem examination is scheduled for Monday, Tiernan said.

“The police are in the early stages of the investigation and cannot comment further at this time.”

There were about seven police officers and photographers at the scene on Sunday.

Four police cars and about seven police officers were seen on a William Ave property in Manurewa on Sunday afternoon.

A William Ave resident said they got home shortly after noon Sunday and encountered several police cars on the road.

“I thought, oh man, what happened?”

There were many officers on the front lawn, on the side of the house and inside, he said.
