Police die in crash on Christmas Day in south Auckland

Two people who died in a car accident on Christmas Day in South Auckland were named Rebecca McAlees and Terry Charleston.

Police confirmed that the couple, aged 24 and 34 respectively, from Whitford in Auckland, were killed when a car crashed into a power pole.

The accident happened on Clevedon-Kawakawa Rd around 7:30 pm on Christmas Day and caused power lines to fall.

A dog also died in the accident, the Kawakawa Bay Volunteer Fire Brigade said.

Police said their investigations into the circumstances of the accident are continuing.

The accident was the second serious accident on Christmas Day, and high speed was a factor.

Earlier that day at 5.45am, police said a person was in critical condition in hospital after an accident on Princes St East in Ōtahuhu.
