Police have confirmed that one person died after the accident in Dome Valley on Wednesday afternoon.

Three others are injured and one is in serious condition.

Emergency services were called to the crash site, near Waiwhiu Conical Peak Rd, around 11.30am on Wednesday.

Two people were flown to Auckland City Hospital after an accident in Dome Valley, north of Auckland.

St John Ambulance spokeswoman Beverley Tse said a critically ill patient had been flown to hospital in a rescue helicopter from Auckland Westpac.

Northland Emergency Services Trust had flown another person in serious condition.

He said that a third person in serious condition was transported by ambulance to the hospital.

A Fire and Emergency NZ spokesperson previously said that people were trapped in the vehicles.

Major road works are underway on SH1 from Puhoi to Wellsford, as part of the construction of the Ara Tūhono Highway and the NZTA project to make travel through the Dome Valley safer.

Much of the highway has only one lane in each direction, with a speed limited to 50 km / h.

State Highway 1 between Warkworth and Wellsford reopened at 3.30pm, about three hours after it was closed due to the accident.
