The police have selected their new motorcycles, but they still have a way to go to find their next patrol vehicles.

A spokeswoman for its Wellington headquarters said police had concluded the bidding process for new patrol motorcycles.

Yamaha Motor New Zealand won the contract.

The main motorcycle it will supply is the Yamaha MT09TRAP patrol motorcycle, with two to be deployed in six months.

Police will also purchase at least one of the larger Yamaha FJR1300AP patrol motorcycles for use on the highways, the spokeswoman said.

The MT09TRAP patrol motorcycle, designed specifically for the police, is based on the Yamaha 900 Tracer, described by the manufacturer as a lightweight touring powered by a three-cylinder engine.

It’s lighter than current police bikes, at 215kg versus 321kg, and features traction control, three ride modes, adjustable handlebars, and hand protectors.

The larger and more powerful Yamaha FJR1300AP is widely used abroad as an escort vehicle for dignitaries and is marketed by Yamaha as the flagship of its fleet of police bikes.

Its four-cylinder engine has a maximum output of 107.5 kW and the huge bike weighs 289 kg.

Neither the police spokeswoman nor the publicly available tender information gave an indication of the cost of the new bikes.

But civilian variants of the MT09TRAP can cost more than $ 15,000 each.

The New Zealand Police operate a fleet of just over two dozen motorcycles, most based in Auckland, and used primarily for road surveillance and VIP escorts. In 2015, the police acquired 10 Honda police motorcycles based on the ST1300 consumer model.

In February, General Motors announced that the Holden brand would move away towards sunset by 2021.

That means the police will need to find a replacement patrol vehicle as the Holden Commodore enters the history books.
