A series of handwritten accusation notes have been delivered to Harborside Drive residents following the vandalism of several trees Sunday.
Locals are “absolutely disgusted” at the suggestion that they are behind the incident, which involved a hooligan cutting eight pōhutukawa trees from the street with a chainsaw.
Paul and Sue Wilson, who have lived on the road for more than 10 years, came home Monday from a trip to Waiheke Island to find a line of felled trees and a short handwritten note in their mailbox.
“I’m absolutely disgusted by that, it clearly hints that one of us has done it,” Sue said.

“Why would we do that? They are beautiful and we absolutely love them. There is one outside that we used to sit and enjoy looking at.”
“Personally, I don’t think it’s anyone from our street, who could do that? I would be very disappointed if it were. “
Another resident, who did not want to be identified, also returned from a weekend away and found “a street that looked bare” and a “nasty note.”
“How dare someone physically come to my house and put it in my mailbox?” He said.
“I was so mad about it. There is someone out there trying to incite a little conflict. “
It’s a shame, he said, because the area is usually a “nice little community.”
“We love the area and we love the trees. We often feed the birds from our front yard and watch them from inside. “
Although the resident does not believe that any of her neighbors may be able to do the act, she does note that the vandal “was not an amateur.”
“It was a clean job. It seems they were pretty good with a chainsaw, they knew what they were doing, ”he said.
Ryan Kneebone, CEO of Tree Fellas, Auckland’s arborist business, agrees.
“They were all shot down in the same direction,” he said.
“There is an efficiency about it that is surprising.”
“Even if the vandal was intoxicated, from their approach, it seems like they just switched to tree cutting mode.”
The vandal is believed to have been in one of two cars in which people had been seen drinking in the area prior to the incident.
Discussions like this between neighbors are too common, says Kneebone.
“We see things like this all the time.”
“Many people cut down their neighbors’ trees because they are concerned about things like leaf litter and unwanted shade.”
For residents of Harborside Drive, he says it is “heartbreaking.”
“Those poor people who live there have now returned to the starting point.”
Police recently released a CCTV image of a man they want to talk to about the incident.
Police want to hear from anyone who has seen the man or anyone he was with, to come forward to assist in the investigation.
