Some piglets go to the market, others stay at home.

But this little pig, a kunekune, affectionately named Ginger, decided it would be a great adventure to take his best friend, Ace, the bullmastiff / shar pei, from Pine Hill to the top of Mount Cargill on Friday.

The first thing owner Patrick Quinn knew was when he received a text message from a Dunedin City Council dog control officer, saying, “Ace is on top of Mt Cargill with a pig. Please contact DCC.”

“It’s the first time they’ve left home,” Quinn said.

“I don’t even know how they got out, or why they did it. They must have wanted to take a scenic drive to the lookout.

“They shouldn’t have come out, but it was kind of fun, for a few seconds.”

He said that they were both around 1 year old and that they had been together since they were born.

They share a house with Quinn and even sleep together.

The dog officer returned them home, where they were scolded.

“Ace looked very guilty. I knew he had been naughty. But Ginger didn’t care less.

“He just grunted and went about his business.”

As a result, the dynamic duo are safely locked behind bars for now.
