Person seriously injured in accident in Central Otago

One person was seriously injured and at least one other moderately injured after a two-vehicle accident in Central Otago.

Emergency services were called for the accident on Scotland St (State Highway 8) near Smith St in Roxburgh just after 5pm on Sunday.

A police spokeswoman said early indications suggested that two vehicles had collided, seriously injuring one person and moderately injuring at least one other.

He said the road was expected to be closed for quite some time and the major accident police unit had been dispatched to the scene.

Diversions were made at the intersections of SH8 and Jedburgh St, and SH8 and Millers Flat Bridge Rd.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area if possible, he said.

New Zealand Fire and Emergency Spokesperson Mau Barabara said two teams from Roxburgh and Millers Flat attended and assisted police.

He said a rescue helicopter believed to be from Dunedin was initially called in for the crash, but was recalled shortly after.

He forwarded any requests for additional comment to the police.
