Person escapes with minor injuries after North Canterbury train accident

One person has escaped with minor injuries after a car collided with a train near Rangiora.

Emergency services were called for the accident between a car and the KiwiRail Coastal Pacific train at a level crossing on Marsh Rd in Rangiora at 7.26am Wednesday.

A KiwiRail spokeswoman confirmed that the Coastal Pacific passenger train was involved in the accident.

“The emergency services are present. More details will be provided shortly, ”he said.

A police spokeswoman said one person was slightly injured and everyone was able to get out of the vehicle shortly after the accident.

St John’s spokesman Gerard Campbell confirmed that one person sustained minor injuries.

They were evaluated and treated on the spot.

There have been several crashes involving trains at the Marsh Rd rail crossing, Rangiora, in recent years.  The latter happened on Wednesday morning.

A man working near the crossing said the train’s horn alerted him to the accident.

Kieran, who declined to give his last name, said a Ute and a trailer appeared to have been hit and turned, hitting part of a fence.

It seemed that the ute had had a “good blow”.

He said he saw a person lying on the ground, but did not appear to be seriously injured.

There had been at least three or four crashes at the Marsh Rd crossing over the past 10 years, and he had seen many accidents, too, he said.

In 2016, one person was seriously injured and two others were “injured on foot” after a southbound TranzRail freight train struck a van.

Kiwi multisport legend Steve Gurney left with minor injuries after his SUV collided with the Coastal Pacific train at the same junction in 2011.

The crossing does not have barrier arms, but it does have a stop sign and a sign warning drivers to “look for trains.”

North Canterbury’s father, Adam Bisseker, 31, was killed when his truck collided with the Coastal Pacific train at a rail crossing on Mulcocks Rd, just a few miles from the Marsh Rd crossing, on February 10.

New Zealand Fire and Emergency spokeswoman Jill Higginson said two teams from Rangiora were sent into the crash, but no one was caught, so they were soon removed.

The Coastal Pacific train travels between Christchurch and Picton on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays every week, leaving Christchurch at 7am and arriving in Picton at 1:15 pm.

The train departs Picton at 2.15pm and returns to Christchurch at 8.30pm
