Soon after, the man reappeared at the front door.

“The police immediately detained him and he is currently at the facility under questioning,” MBIE says in its statement.

“Facility security was reviewed and immediate improvements were made after this incident.”

‘Low risk to public health’

Public Health says the health risk of COVID-19 from the man’s escape has been “assessed as low.”

“The man returned from Australia on a deportation flight on September 16 and tested negative after tests on day three and day 12. He is on day 12 of his stay,” the statement said. “He has been asymptomatic throughout his stay.”

What time the man managed to escape is unknown, and police are checking CCTV to find out where the man went while he was off the premises.

“While the exact movements of this person are still being determined, immediate investigations were conducted in the vicinity, which have not established any particular business or property entered by the fugitive at this time,” says MBIE.

“This person has put himself and others at potential risk and his actions were unacceptable. Willingly leaving our facility will not be tolerated and appropriate action will be taken.”
