A pedestrian who died after being hit by a car in Tokoroa over the weekend was identified by police.

Keith Robert Roebuck, 70, of New Plymouth, died after the crash on State Highway 1 at midnight Saturday.

A second pedestrian, Roebuck’s wife, Louise, was injured and is in critical condition in the Waikato Hospital Intensive Care Unit.

Roebuck was well known within the Taranaki construction industry, with the Roebuck family building homes in the region for more than 40 years.

His father, Neville, founded Roebuck Construction in 1946, before selling it in the 1980s.

Keith Roebuck then started his own construction business in New Plymouth, which he ran for 35 years before establishing a partnership with his son Anthony as K&A Roebuck Construction. He retired in 2014 and Anthony took over.

Roebuck was the father of six children and had nine grandchildren.

He was also a life member of the East End Surf Lifesaving Club. The club’s flag flew at half mast on Monday.

Investigations into the circumstances of the accident were ongoing and a police spokeswoman said it was too early to speculate on possible causes.

She said everyone had a role to play in keeping the roads safe.

“It is up to each user of public roads to pay absolute attention to what they do when they drive, drive or cross the street.

“As a driver, the decisions you make affect not only you and those in your vehicle, but everyone else on the road around you as well.”

He said they expected people to drive safely within the speed limit set by law or slower depending on conditions.

“Everyone in the car should wear a seatbelt … we urge you to drive according to conditions, wear a seatbelt, do not drive while tired or after drinking or using drugs, and put away your cell phone.”
