A passenger in a car who fled police in the Far North overnight was killed in the accident that followed.
Two more people, including the driver, were seriously injured and taken to hospital, while two others suffered moderate to minor injuries.
Police began chasing the vehicle in downtown Kaitaia around 1.20 a.m. but soon gave up the chase due to speed and driving, Northland District Commander Superintendent Tony Hill said.
“The fleeing vehicle continued down a country road and crashed into a power pole,” Hill said.
A back seat passenger died at the scene.
“Runaway driver events can be volatile, unpredictable, and high risk for everyone involved, so whether or not to pursue a fleeing driver is one of the most serious decisions our staff faces on the front line.
“Our officers come to work every day to keep people safe and prevent harm, so this is the worst possible outcome.”
Hill extended his “sincerest condolences” to the families affected by the tragedy.
“The circumstances of this incident will be subject to a police investigation and the Independent Authority for Police Conduct will be notified.”
The road was closed for an examination of the scene overnight and reopened shortly before 6 a.m. M.
