Six members of the touring team of the Pakistan cricket team in New Zealand tested positive for Covid-19 in isolation administered in Christchurch.
New Zealand Cricket confirmed the news on Thursday, adding that two of the six results had been deemed “historic.”
All six members of the squad would be transferred to the quarantine arm of the managed isolation facility, while the team’s exemption for training had been suspended until investigations were completed.
Before leaving Pakistan, all members of the touring team had tested negative on all four occasions they were tested.
“While this is disappointing for the Pakistan team, the test results and actions taken show that the government system is working,” NZC said in a statement.
In addition to the positive tests, NZC said that some members of the Pakistan team had violated protocols on the first day of managed isolation.
“We will have discussions with tourists to help them understand the requirements.
“NZC considers public health and safety to be paramount in organizing international teams and supports the position of the Ministry of Health and Government.”
Pakistan, which arrived in New Zealand on Tuesday, would face the Black Caps in three T20s and two test matches, starting on December 20.
